Cervical or neck pain may occur due to abnormalities in soft tissues like muscles, nerves, and ligaments. It might also take place in joints or bones of the spine. The most common reason is any injury, or wear and tear in the spine. Infections or tumors may also lead to cervical pains. This pain might occur in arms, upper back or shoulders.
Causes of cervical pain:
Disc degeneration, arthritis, deformation of spinal canal, meningitis, and cancer can lead to cervical pain. If you suffer from severe cervical pain then you should consult your doctor and other medical experts like neurologists, orthopedists, neurosurgeons, or chiropractors.
Symptoms of cervical pain:
* Stiffness * Soreness on one or both the sides of the neck * Burning pain * Problem while walking or writing * Problem while swallowing or speaking * Headache * Fever * Nausea * Dizziness * Pain, weakness or numbness in arms * Blurred vision * Tiredness * Weight loss without apparent reason If you have any of the above mentioned symptoms, then go to an orthopedist as soon as possible. If you do not have any injury, it is recommended that you go for a medical examination or consultation when you have neck pain that is: * Pain that carries down the arms or legs * Leads to numbness, weakness, headaches, etc * Continuous and persistent Diagnosis of cervical pain: * CT (computed tomography) is a type of an X-ray which helps in examining the bone and the spinal canal. * EMG (electromyogram) helps to test nerve and muscle function. * MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is the X-ray that studies the spinal cord and nerve roots. * Milligram performs the same function as an MRI. * Other general diagnoses include studying the neck motion, nerves and muscles functioning in your legs and arms, and tenderness in the neck. * Understanding basis of your health-related problem by reading your medical history Emergency symptoms:It is advised that you seek immediate medical advice in case of the following cases: * Irritation * Tenderness while neck movement * High fever * Sensitivity to light You might also get cervical pain if you meet with accident and are injured. Rest and neck collar is prescribed if you suffer from inflammation from movements that over-stretch neck muscles and ligaments.
